How to Make the Christmas Feeling Come to Life by Samson Hannison
Christmas has been, and I believe always will be a time when the happy memories of the past and also the anticipation of making new ones for the future energize our environment. The air seems sweeter, individuals friendlier and outlooks are more positive. To translate the joyful emotion in our hearts thru colors and styles in our houses is like a compulsion we cannot stop. Instead of following to the letter decorating tips we have been practicing since we were young let us try fresh ideas to help build new memories. Even though we could just go to the mall, or purchase a selection of quality home decor online, there is quite a lot we can do without spending any money.
Let us start with the front entrance. For as long as I can remember doors would always have wreaths all through Christmas time. The only variation the wreaths might have from year to year is the combination of ribbons, pinecones and flowers on it. An unique idea worth testing is not to utilize wreaths but garlands instead. The garland don’t have to be long, just drape it from the upper corners of the threshold so it frames the upper area of the door. It does not need to outline the complete door just the upper sections will do. Another nice idea would be to embellish it like a Christmas tree with frills and tinsel, thus giving the feeling that behind the door more excitement await. On the other hand, because we used the garland to embellish the door its traditional spot at the mantle can now be spruced up in a different way. Using candles as decorations on the mantle will add not only Christmas cheer but romance as well. My husband and I have been collecting Christmas themed candles for many years. Candles elaborately shaped just like trees or just those simple ones in the Christmas colors of red and green will work nicely. Group them with each other on the mantle based on your style and break the monotony with a vase of blossoms. The candles should be in vibrant colors so that the mantle will come alive, cranberry, red and green are wonderful options.
The tassles I was so fond of playing with when we were young are good for finishing touches in a room, you may hang them beside drawers and desks or door knobs. These are immediately noticed among the monotone color of the door or furniture. Red, green and gold tassels add just the right amount of color and luxury to complete a room. We also need not buy new things or Christmas specific accessories just to make our homes ready for the holidays. An accessory like a vase, bowl or bottle that have colors associated with the holiday like gold, green or red can be used as decorations on center or side tables. In keeping with table decorations, when having family dinners together this season bear in mind to keep within the theme with the use of Christmas colors for accent pieces. Don’t go overboard and buy green or red dinner plates just one or two items will do such as the bowl that holds the Main Dish or table napkins. If you really want to go overboard, decide which Christmas recipes you plan on cooking on Christmas day, analyze the colors involved, and pick table decorations that are in harmony with the colors used in the food.
Wrapping presents is also a tradition that my family still carry out with each other. This year do not hold back using the ribbons and wrapping paper. Think about wrapping the present to look like it is overflowing with love. Give not just the item inside the package but a smile created by the exuberance of the package.
