Get Togethers

How are you getting through the holiday parties and family get togethers?
Sometimes I have a hard time and I just simply eat very little meat, not a total vegetarian.
I was at a company party where we had to preorder an entree. I chose lasagna. Called the restaurant to see if they could leave the meat out of a single serving. They said no. I picked around it.
Most of the time at a covered dish thing I can eat the sides, salads and desserts.
Anyway, how do you cope?
The reason I can’t eat a lot of meat is TMI.
Some good answers here, thanks.
Grin and bear it! LOL Really, that’s all you can do. Some family & friends make an effort to provide veggie foods and in that case I let them know how very grateful I am. After all, I don’t expect special treatment, and if someone goes out of their way to accommodate me, I truly am touched.
For those family who don’t respect my choices (I’m talking mother in law here!) I just smile politely and eat what I can. Of course, sometimes that means nothing but celery & carrot sticks without dip (cause the dip has bacon in it!) but… whatever. When meat-eaters come to my house I DO NOT provide meat dishes for them, therefore I don’t expect special treatment when I visit their homes. If it is a big family get-together, I bring a salad or something veggie ~ which serves two purposes. 1) I have something to eat! 2) It educates others on how delicious a veggie diet can be.
Regarding company parties, etc. ~ I usually do speak up & suggest that veggie items be offered if not this year then next.
However … you said yourself that you are not a vegetarian, so don’t be surprised if people expect you to eat meat at holiday parties. I’ve been a vegetarian for 20 years and people STILL claim to forget or they say, “what’s the big deal, just pick it off” So…. if people can be disrespectful to a lifelong vegetarian, don’t expect them to make exceptions to a sometimes meat eater.
Just eat what you can… and fix a decent meal when you get home. That’s the best you can do
