Reader’s Digest

Reader’s Digest is, without a doubt, one of the most popular magazines of all time. Its peak was in 1984, when more than seventeen million Americans had a subscription, which resulted in eleven million more subscribers around the world.  It was published in nineteen foreign languages.

The format of this publication has remained unchanged over the years, consisting of around thirty or so short stories and articles.  Much of what is printed consists of condensed versions of short stories that have been published in other magazines, newspapers, or books.

Readers Digest has been around for 80+ years and is still going strong.  Over the years, the publication has featured articles that are humorous, serious, and informative.  Readers have also been allowed to submit their own short “humorous” stories and experiences.  A reader can cry, laugh, smile, and experience other emotions by reading just one issue.

There have also been very informative articles concerning medical issues, social issues, research information on diseases, etc.  There have also been controversial articles over the years, especially around the time of the Cold War.  Some of the articles denounced communism and accused church groups of being liberal or radical.

During the 1990′s, the popularity of the magazine dwindled some.  The publishers had to cut some costs, and by doing so they had no choice but to change the design of the magazine.  The length was cut down about 25%.

Reader’s Digest is still a very popular magazine, and is well worth buying a subscription for.  Millions of readers around the world still subscribe to this publication in order to read the informative, humorous, and outstanding stories.   The stories and articles are still just as wonderful as they ever were.  Reader’s Digest  has been around for 80+ years, and still has many more years to go.
